Deceased Name: SAMUEL HENRY AKERS ROANOKE RAPIDS

- Mr. Samuel Henry Akers, 79, of 636 Cedar Street, Roanoke Rapids, N.C., died Thursday, March 26, 1998, at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, N.C.

A native of Roanoke Rapids, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, and a World War II, U.S.

Army Air Corps veteran; served with the 9th Air Force Service Command; served two years in the European Theater; and attained the rank of major.

Mr. Akers worked for J.P. Stevens as an accountant for 33 years, served on the board of the Roanoke Rapids, Sanitary District for 33 years, 25 years as chairman.

A member of First United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the Board and held the office of treasurer for 10 years. He was also past commander of the VFW post in Roanoke Rapids, a former member of the Roanoke Rapids Kiwanis Club, a mason and a shriner.

Mr. Akers is survived by wife, Betty Shurett Akers; daughters, Shurett Akers Rawlings of Rocky Mount, Mary Pat Akers Langford of Greenville; son, Kenneth Holley Akers of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; sister, Virginia Akers Brown of Roanoke Rapids; six grandchildren, Kenneth Holley Akers II, Meridath Rawlings, Holley Alers, Adams Rawlings, Patrick Rawlings, Scott Langford.

Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at The First United Methodist Church, Roanoke Rapids, N.C., with Dr. Sam Dixon officiating.

The family will receive at Wrenn Funeral Home Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m.
