Deceased Name: Lorene Rush Highley
HIGHLEY
Lorene Rush, loving wife and mother, noted artist and business
woman, died on December 20, following an extended illness. Mrs.
Highley was born in Forrest, New Mexico, near Tucumcari. She had
attended Eastern New Mexico Junior College at Portales, N.M.,
and New Mexico Normal at Las Vegas, N.M., and then taught school
for three years at Loving, N.M.
She married Fred A. Highley on June 17, 1940, at Santa Rosa,
N.M. The Highleys moved to Oklahoma City following W.W. II where
they established the F.A. Highley Company in 1946.
She served as vice-president of the organization for more than
40 years, retiring in August of 1988.
Lorene joined First Christian Church of Oklahoma City with her
husband Fred in March of 1948 and has been a loyal and devoted
member since that time. She was active in the Keystone Sunday
School Class, Group 16 of the Christian Women's Fellowship and
for the past year she and her husband have co-chaired First
Christian Church's Centennial Committee. Mrs. Highley was also a
member of the Downtown Kiwanis Ladies Club, the Watercolor
Association, Central Art Association, the Oklahoma Art Guild,
the Oklahoma Museum of Art, the Art Department of her church,
the Aquarius Bookclub, Redbud Women's Club and several bridge
clubs. She and her husband loved dancing and were active in the
Revelers Club, the 38 Club, the Petroleum Club, Quail Creek Golf
and Country Club and the Moose Lodge.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Fred A. Highley of
the home; their son, Larry, and his wife Marilyn; three
grandsons, Ryan, Justin, and Morgan; two sisters, Irene King and
Hester Lee Loving; two brothers-in-law, B.E. Highley and Bill
Loving; one niece, Charlene Nassif and her husband, Martin; and
their two children, Marty and Katy.
The family has requested that memorials be directed to the First
Christian Church Centennial Fund or the Baptist Medical Center
Cancer Fund. Services will be held Friday, December 23 at 1:00
P.M. at the First Christian Church, 3700 N. Walker.
