MURPHY, I. D., (Darrell), 69, of Rocky Mount, died Thursday, October 12, 2000 in the VA Hospital in Asheville, N.C. due to complications during heart surgery. He was the last surviving member of his family and was retired from the U.S. Army with 22 years of service and also retired from the VA Hospital in Salem with 20 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Mozzello Murphy; his first wife, Audrey Nichols Murphy; a daughter, Cindy Murphy; son, Douglas "Peaches" Murphy and his brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife, Linda J. Murphy of the home; his sons, Jeffery C. "Jeff" Murphy and Richard L. "Ricky" Murphy, Rocky Mount; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Duane Brizendine, Rocky Mount; two grandchildren, Aimee and Dannie Brizendine; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Henry and Jean Holtzapfel, Beckley, W.Va.; two special nieces, Amanda Fitzwater and Laura Wray; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Roger D. Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Head of the River Cemetery, Floyd County. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Flora Funeral Service, S. Main Street, Rocky Mount and other times at the home of his daughter.
