Palatine Countryside (IL) - October 9, 1997
Deceased Name: Anna Countryman
Memorial services for Anna L. (Sleeth) Countryman, 71, a resident of Palatine since 1967, were held Saturday at the Presbyterian Church of Palatine. Interment was private.

Born Oct. 11, 1925, in Kokomo, Ind., she died Oct.1 at Northwest Continuing Care Center in Arlington Heights. Before her retirement, she was employed at Motorola's International Division. She was a member of the High School District 211 Board from 1972 to 1992. In 1984 she was named State School Board Member of the Year by the State Board of Education. In 1973 she was appointed a member and alternate member of the Northwest Suburban Special Education Organization, where she served until 1985.

Hoffman Estates High School gives out the Anna Countryman Spirit Award each year to the student who demonstrates the most school spirit and participation.

She was a former member of the Palatine Township Senior Citizen Advisory Board and the Northwest Community Hospital Foundation Board, and a member of several Republican organizations, the District 3 Advisory Council for the village of Palatine, the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority Alumni Club and the Palatine Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Highley H.; two sons, William S. (Phyllis) of Tappahannock, Va., and Andrew D. (Antoinette) of Elmhurst; a sister, Carol S. (Kenneth) Jackson of Simsbury, Conn.; a brother, Maurice E. (Betty) Sleeth of Wytheville, Va., and five grandchildren.
