ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. Allen Edwin Akers, 82, of 1 Cedar St., died Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Mr. Akers was a native of Roa noke Rapids and was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a past member of the board of directors of the Roanoke Rapids Savings & Loan Association; past president of the Roanoke Rapids Kiwanis Club; past chairman of the board of trustees of Halifax Community College; recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Roanoke Lions Club; recipient of Roanoke Exchange Club's Golden Deeds Award; member of the Halifax Community College Foundation; served as a Roanoke Rapids city councilman; and chairman of the Roanoke Canal Commission.

Before retiring, Mr. Akers was the division industrial relations director for J.P. Stevens & Co.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Billy F. Seate. Burial will be in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Esther Pridgen Akers; a son, Dr. Richard E. Akers of Gastonia; a daughter, Mrs. Ivy A. Sinaiko of Alexandria, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Brown of Roanoke Rapids; a brother, Mr. S. Henry Akers of Roanoke Rapids; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Wrenn Funeral Home.
